Surf in Bali: compare areas, conditions and people planning to paddle out

Compare 20 Bali surf spots and areas, check the ocean for the day, then explore real public sessions by coast, time and level. If none fits, publish your own plan.

Carving Mates connects people around a plan. It is not a surf school, lifeguard service or guarantee that conditions are suitable.

Bali surf spots and areas: a 20-spot planning matrix

Start with actual ability, bottom and today’s conditions, not a famous beach name. A complete beginner should use a qualified school that selects a small teaching section on the day; specific banks at Kuta, Legian or Seminyak, or a suitable Batu Bolong peak, may fit supervised learning in small conditions. Most other locations below default to intermediate or harder surfing, and the shallow Bukit reefs require substantially more experience. April–October makes the west and southwest coasts useful first checks, while November–March may shift that first check east or southeast when the actual wind suits the beach orientation. Current swell, wind, tide, current, water quality, access and crowd override the calendar. The labels below describe a spot’s usual character in suitable conditions, never today’s ocean, and “beginner” never means a safety guarantee.

Spot or areaCoast / zoneBreak and bottomTypical fitCommon windowRisks and checks
Kuta BeachUrban southwest, BadungMulti-bank sand beachbreak; lefts and rights rather than one fixed peak.Beginner with an instructor and a small bank; stronger days suit more experienced surfers.Around April or May to October.Rips on bigger days, crowd, runoff after rain, exact bank, tide and beach flags.
Legian / PadmaImmediately north of KutaExposed beachbreaks over moving banks; Padma and Legian are different peaks and Padma can include rock.Intermediate by default at Padma; a novice only on a gentle Legian bank selected by an instructor.Around May to October.Rips at Legian, rock and crowd at Padma, the bank, current and swimming zones.
Seminyak / Double Six–Blue OceanLegian–Seminyak stripShort, shifting beach peaks over sand with scattered rock; some banks close out abruptly.Beginner only in supervised whitewater or a small bank; intermediate as power increases.Around May to October.Rips in solid swell, closeouts, mixed bottom and water quality after rain.
Batu Bolong / Old Man’sCanggu, southwest coastMellow right over mixed sand and reef, with neighbouring peaks that behave differently.Beginner–intermediate when small or moderate and properly instructed; not a learner wave when large or saturated.Dry season, roughly April to October.Reef contact, many boards, murky water and the exact peak selected.
BerawaSouthern end of the Canggu corridorSeveral peaks; the main beachbreak mixes sand and rock, while nearby reef peaks have a different character.Intermediate by default; a progressing beginner only at a small peak with guidance.Around April to October.Rock, runoff after rain, material differences between peaks, bottom, tide and current.
Echo Beach / SandbarCanggu–Echo BeachA zone, not one break: Sandbar is a sand A-frame; Echo Left and Stairs use shallow reef, with River Mouth separate again.Intermediate–advanced; Sandbar can demand advanced or expert ability. Not a learner default.Around April to October.Currents, crowd, moving banks, runoff, reef and the precise named peak.
PererenanImmediately northwest of Echo BeachBeach-and-reef break over reef, rock and sand; shorter left and longer right.Experienced intermediate–advanced.Around May to October.Shallow inside reef at low tide, rips, rock, crowd and river pollution after rain.
KedunguTabanan, near Tanah LotThree-break zone; the main peak is an A-frame over a submerged reef platform.Intermediate by default; beginner only on a gentle small peak chosen by an instructor. No reliable spot-specific month range published across the reviewed sources.Shallow reef, rock and urchins at low tide, powerful high-tide shorebreak, access and local ceremonies.
BalianWest Tabanan, river mouthVariable river-mouth zone combining beach, rock or reef and moving banks, usually favouring lefts.Intermediate as a baseline; easier sections still require small conditions and supervision.May to October as a tendency, not a guarantee.Rip, rock, shifting position and murky or polluted water after rain; inspect the river.
MedewiWest coast, JembranaLong left point over cobble, rock and sand; nearby beach sections differ from the point.Intermediate at the point; novice only on a separate small sandy section selected by a guide.Around April or May to October.Rocky entry and exit, impacts, crowd, tide and murky water after rain.
UluwatuSouthwest Bukit, PecatuChain of coral and lava lefts: The Peak, Racetrack, Temples, Outside Corner and Bombie.Advanced–expert; a small Peak may suit a solid reef-experienced intermediate, never a novice.Dry season, roughly April to October.Shallow reef, currents, cave entry or exit, actual size and named peak; Racetrack low tide is especially demanding.
Padang Padang LeftWest Bukit, PecatuHeavy, hollow left over coral and lava; this is the main break, not Padang Right or “Baby Padang”.Advanced–expert and professional when classic.Around May to September; some guidance extends the tendency into October.Exposed sharp reef, dangerous low tide, big-water entry or exit and crowd.
BinginWest Bukit, PecatuShort, fast and sometimes hollow left over shallow lava and coral reef.Intermediate–advanced.Around April or May to October.Exposed reef, tide, crowd, entry or exit and rapid increase in intensity with size.
BalanganWest Bukit, BadungLeft reef with shifting peaks and long walls over coral-covered lava.Intermediate–advanced.Around April to October.Coral impacts, growing size, long paddle-backs after long rides and tide.
DreamlandWest Bukit, between Bingin and BalanganBeachbreak with reef and rock sections; sand, rock and reef bottom with lefts and rights.Intermediate by default; novice only on a small day, suitable section and with an instructor.Around April or May to October.Submerged rock, shorebreak, poor shape in large swell, the exact bank and sector.
ImpossiblesReef chain between Padang Padang and BinginLong left over shallow lava and coral reef; fast and prone to sectioning.Intermediate–advanced.Around April or May to October.Shallow reef, hard-to-connect sections, long paddles, crowd and entry or exit route.
Nusa DuaEast / southeast BukitBroad open-ocean reef zone with several predominantly right-hand peaks; not one wave.Intermediate–advanced, becoming advanced with size.Around November to March or April.Strong current, surprise sets, distant reef, deceptive size from shore, exact peak, paddle or boat and exit.
Sanur ReefEast coast, DenpasarRight reef over extremely shallow sharp coral; not the sheltered lagoon, Baby Reef or Hyatt Reef.Advanced–expert.Around October or November to April.Low tide exposes reef, meaningful swell is required and the named break must be confirmed.
SeranganSoutheast, DenpasarMultiple peaks over sharp shallow reef; larger swell can produce a powerful hollow right.Intermediate–advanced.Around October to April.Reef, differences between peaks, sharp change with larger swell, current, tide and present-day access.
KeramasEast coast, GianyarHigh-performance right over coral-covered lava in front of a black-sand beach.Intermediate–advanced; advanced with size. Can work year-round; sources favour November to April and low-wind mornings.Shallow sections, rips, crowd, early wind, tide and exit.

Before entering, check BMKG’s official Laut Bali marine forecast and wave warnings, the local tide, beach flags or notices and advice from a qualified local instructor or guide. An open-ocean forecast does not by itself predict the wave breaking over a particular bank or reef.

Turn “surf Bali” into a clear, joinable plan

  1. 1

    Choose a real session

Compare the approximate coast, date, time, level and available places before requesting to join.

  2. 2

    Check the ocean separately

Use current forecasts, local warnings and direct observation. A public plan never certifies the conditions.

  3. 3

    Coordinate before travelling

If the host accepts your request, use the chat to confirm the public meeting point and any changes.

Create a Bali surf plan

A surf plan is not a safety assessment

Bali has very different coastlines, reef and beach breaks. The same forecast can produce different conditions at Kuta, Canggu, the Bukit Peninsula or the east coast.

Every participant must check current swell, wind, tide, access, warnings and their own ability. Carving Mates does not select a safe spot or supervise user sessions.

Local planning notes and sources

Kuta and Legian

These west-coast beach areas are widely used by learners and schools, but conditions and crowds change by hour. A post should name a recognisable public meeting area, state whether it is practice or independent surfing, and never promise beginner-safe water.

Canggu, Berawa and Pererenan

Nearby breaks can have different bottoms, currents, exposure and crowd pressure. “Canggu” alone may be too broad: include the approximate beach area, intended time and honest level so people can decide whether the plan is relevant.

Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula

Many Bukit reef breaks, access points and currents require local knowledge and experience. A social session is not instruction. Beginners should choose a qualified school and an appropriate teaching location instead of following a generic user post.

Sanur and the east coast

Wind and seasonal patterns can make the east and west coasts behave differently. Check the same-day marine forecast and local advice rather than assuming a month, coast or app colour guarantees a useful window.

Level, board and intent

Say whether the plan is a relaxed paddle-out, longboard session, shortboard session or supervised lesson arranged elsewhere. Include your real level and equipment needs; do not label a peer meetup as a class.

Forecast, flags and observation

BMKG provides official marine information, but model values still need local interpretation. Recheck alerts, beach flags, access and the ocean on arrival. If the conditions do not match your level, do not enter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I browse without creating an account?

Yes. You can explore public plans without an account. A free account is required to request to join or publish a plan.

Does Carving Mates run surf lessons in Bali?

No. Carving Mates helps people discover and coordinate public activity plans. Surf lessons must be booked directly with a qualified school or instructor.

Which Bali surf spot should I choose?

Carving Mates does not choose a spot for you. Compare the coast, forecast, tide, access, local guidance and your real ability before deciding.

Are the public sessions supervised?

Not unless the session description clearly identifies a real qualified provider. A normal user session is a peer plan, not instruction or lifeguard supervision.

Can I find beginner surf in Bali here?

You can filter public plans by level, but a beginner should still use a qualified school and confirm that the teaching location and conditions are appropriate that day.

What if conditions change?

Recheck official forecasts and local conditions, then coordinate any change through the session chat. Cancel or postpone if the ocean does not match the group’s ability.
